Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine have been in existence for over 3,000 years. Acupuncture continues to gain popularity in the U.S and is now widely accepted as an important aspect of Complementary Medicine.
The goal of Oriental Medicine is to achieve and maintain balance, allowing our bodies to function optimally. When our internal energy is not balanced or circulating properly, conditions such as infertility can manifest. Outside factors, such as stress or illness, can also affect that balance and acupuncture helps to restore it.
Acupuncture works by inserting very fine, sterile needles into points on the body to access pathways of energy, called meridians, which draws energy to weaker areas or releases it from stronger ones. Additional acupuncture information is available within the resources section of our site.
Acupuncture helps restore balance in addition to targeting specific aspects of the fertility journey:
Regulates menstrual cycles
Regulates the hormones to produce a larger number of follicles
Improves the function of the ovaries to produce higher quality eggs
Increases the blood flow to the uterus and increases the thickness of the uterine lining
Eases stress, anxiety and depression
Decreases uterine contraction, thus increasing implantation rates in Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
Increases the chance of conceiving via IVF; according to a 2002 German study, the success rate of women undergoing IVF increased from 26% to 43% when accompanied by acupuncture treatments directly before and after IVF
Decreases the chance of miscarriage and increases the rate of live birth
Increases sperm quality and quantity

"In 2004, I became pregnant after nearly four years of traditional medical infertility treatment including two rounds of IVF. (The second IVF attempt was accompanied by acupuncture.) When my husband and I decided we would like to try for a second child, I became a patient of OHS with the hope that traditional medical intervention and all of the attendant stress, expense and hormone injections could be avoided.
From my first appointment at OHS, David's deep knowledge of infertility issues and his skill in traditional Chinese medicine were readily apparent and I felt completely comfortable talking with him and his staff about a very personal and emotionally charged subject. I found the atmosphere of OHS to be very positive and compassionate. The holistic approach of OHS greatly enhanced my sense of well being during the months we were trying to conceive and I always left appointments with a sense of calm, relaxed peacefulness instead of the impatient anxiety I so often felt after traditional medical appointments.
On the fourth month of trying for a baby with the help of OHS, I became pregnant. I do not believe this would have happened without the help of OHS. I am extremely grateful to David and his staff for their support and assistance in helping us get pregnant in a natural way. Although I am 20 weeks pregnant now, it is still difficult for me to grasp that we got pregnant without scientific intervention.
When trying for our first child, I felt I had to try to investigate ways of improving our chances of conceiving each cycle on my own. This extra work only added to my already high level of stress. We are extremely fortunate to have OHS as a resource in our community with a full spectrum of experts and services which make the infertility life crisis so much easier to manage. I firmly believe the anguish and depression I experienced during the nearly four years we tried to get pregnant with our first child could have been avoided or greatly alleviated had I been at patient of OHS at that time."
